When a family embarked on building their dream contemporary ranch house in California, they sought balance. They wanted the property “to feel cozy when it was just the five of them but also feel spacious enough when they were hosting for the day, weekend, or longer,” says designer Lindye Galloway.
The seven-bedroom, 11-bathroom home is separated into two wings: one for the kids and one for the adults. The primary kitchen is the nexus of the entertaining hub, where a double island allows for easy cooking and relaxed dining. Clever zoning of secondary spaces, like a butler’s and walk-in pantry, keeps the space tidy and well-equipped. Slow mornings can be enjoyed at the cozy breakfast nook. At night, the sleek bar lends a moody backdrop for pre-dinner beverages.
Equally important was weighing the family’s earthy, streamlined style while ensuring maximum functionality. “They really wanted the pretty mixed with how they’re actually going to embrace the home with people over,” Galloway says. “Not just practical, Where do I put my spices? But practical, How do we create a really welcoming environment for people that doesn’t make them feel like it’s a stiff museum?”
Throughout the property, a neutral color palette guided by the natural landscape sets a calming tone while letting the views from large windows stand out. A mix of custom and vintage pieces meets every need, from the custom sectional in the family room that comfortably fits the whole family to vintage planters that add pops of aged charm. Durable materials, like marble kitchen counters and limestone bathroom flooring, build character.
Just beyond the main house, a pool cabana and outdoor kitchen provide space for eating and lounging in between dips in the pool on hot days. When guests stay over, they can settle into the private, detached two-bedroom guest house—cementing the property as the ultimate hangout house for the family, their relatives, and friends.
Entry
Through the entry, glass-and-steel doors by Arcadia Custom lead to a limestone patio off the backyard. Planters sourced from Olive Ateliers and Still Interiors add an aged touch. “The clients were really drawn to plants and vintage pots, so we made sure to include them through the interior as well as exterior spaces,” Galloway says.
