Spoiled Great Pyrenees Will Never Forget the Restaurant That Gave Him Treats

Some dogs are what they call food-motivated. I would have thought that all dogs were food motivated, but my parents had an Old English Sheepdog who was very particular about treats, and would turn his nose up at all but his favorite brand of potato chip. Maybe I’ve spent too much time in the rescue dog space, where many pups have had the misfortune of not knowing where their next meals come rom. (Of course, I’ve also had dogs since they were puppies, who never knew a day of hardship in their life, and would still throw down for a milk bone.)

I don’t know if Great Pyrenees in general are a food-motivated breed, but this particular pup certainly is!

In this clip, a Great Pyrenees dog is visiting a restaurant again after a two-year absence. Last time he was on the premises, one of the workers gave him a piece of cheesy bread. And it’s clear from his behavior that he has never forgotten it.

From the moment he enters the store, he makes a beeline for the back counter to see if his friend is there—the man is, and it’s clear he remembers this giant, beautiful dog too. He approaches the dog, who wags his tail in obvious recognition —or maybe just hope. And yes, the man is still prepared to spoil the visiting dog rotten, getting him a “little bread” and even letting it cool down from the oven first!

I think he’s made a friend for life.

Getting a Dog To Like You

For most dogs, food and treats and the quickest ways to their heart. For my parents picky dog, this was less the case, but he liked almost no one who was not my mother, anyway. Seriously, we used to make a joke of how pathetic the poor beast looked whenever we would dog-sit.

But dogs in general are often won over by a few treats. Ask any mailman.

Of course, there’s more than just food when it comes to the heart of a dog. Respect, quality time, and bonding are also great ways to make a dog like you. As well as scratching that one spot right on their chest.

But food’s a big one.

When bringing a dog into a store, especially a big one like a Great Pyrenees, make sure you are very aware of the stores’ policy when it comes to animals. You don’t want to surprise anyone inside with a dog the size of a horse. Clearly, however, this store is canine friendly. Maybe even a little too friendly.

Is a Great Pyrenees Right For You?

As the name implies, Great Pyrenees Dogs, or “Pyrs” are great indeed, enormous dogs, originally bred to protect sheep from wolves on snowy mountaintops. In their role as livestock guardians, they were prized for loyalty, gentleness, and protectiveness. Despite their enormous size, they are highly friendly animals that make good family dogs, and apparently very good patrons at a restaurant.

As with all large dogs, especially strong-willed ones like the Pyr, early trading and socialization is necessary to tame any impulses that would make them get in trouble. Their size makes it extra important that they learn to be calm and gentle.
