You have to applaud a duo who have a small child, manage to keep their kitchen spotless, and regularly throw dinner parties at home. That’s exactly who Lindsey Black’s clients—a pair of doctors, one of whom is an accomplished pianist—are and what they wanted their new home in East Memphis, Tennessee, to empower them to do. They chose it for its traditional feel, mature landscaping, and good neighborhood—not its floor plan; so getting there took work.
Architect David Anderson reoriented the kitchen to overlook the backyard, turning the former space into a small but fully equipped scullery and the former hearth room (complete with a fireplace, which was removed) into the family’s everyday kitchen. Black enhanced the cozy eight-foot ceilings and new layout with dark walnut finishes, moody colors, and French country–inspired details. The result is a low-key, beautiful room that’s ready for an impromptu cocktail hour.
Black chose neutral materials—walnut, marble, plaster, and unlacquered brass—to keep the space timeless. Unique corner windows bring in natural light. Paint: Sandbar (walls, trim, and cabinets), Sherwin-Williams.
The plaster range hood was color-matched to the walls and cabinets. Countersplash: Calacatta Caldia honed marble, Triton Stone. Pot filler: Waterstone Faucets. Range: Lacanche.
Reeded glass doors obscure the contents of tall walnut cabinets by Bylercraft Custom Cabinetry. Hardware: Classic Brass. Lighting: Visual Comfort & Co. Sink: Kohler. Faucet: Waterstone Faucets.
Scullery
This workhorse space can also function as a catering kitchen. A brass gallery rail for the shelves by Paxton Hardware coordinates with the cabinet pulls. Paint: Palmer Green, Benjamin Moore. Wallcovering: Peter Fasano. Lighting: Visual Comfort & Co. Wine column: Dacor.
Dining Area
Black selected a cerused oak Highland House dining table and Century Furniture chairs with a refined shape and more casual woven back because they suit everyday and formal occasions. The Ralph Lauren for Visual Comfort & Co. easel allows the homeowners to display art in a room that doesn’t have room on the walls to hang it; this piece is by Laurel-Dawn Latshaw. Pendants: Currey & Company. Drapery: custom, in Schumacher fabric.
