Kind Motorists Stop to Care for Rescue Pig Stranded on I-76 in Philadelphia
Drivers on the I-76 highway were in for a surprise on Wednesday. No, it wasn't a traffic jam. It was a near 300 pound pig named Dorothy, who'd escaped from a trailer taking her to an animal rescue and ended up on the side of the highway. Luckily some good samaritans spotted the hog and stopped everything to care for her.
Speaking with Fox 29, Anna Kulczycki of Eastern Snouts Adoption and Rehoming, explained that Dorothy was traveling from her foster home when the incident happened.
Kulczycki explained that the pig, who is a 2-year-old Mangalica pig, was on her way to get checked in to the rescue before a vet appointment on Thursday morning, Fox 29 reports. The pig was being transported on the Schuylkill Expressway in bumper to bumper traffic when she managed to escape her trailer and ended up on the side of the road.

CBS News reports the driver of the car, Allyson Stephens, was driving Dorothy and another rescue pig when it happened. Stephens said Dorothy got out on the ramp from Route 202 to I-76 eastbound. She didn't know that the pig was missing until she heard other drivers on the road honking their horns.
When Stephens realized what happened, she got out of her car and managed to track Dorothy down with the help of some kind strangers willing to pull over and lend a hand. Philadelphia police aided the group as they got the 270 lbs. pig back into the trailer. She was a little worse for the wear after the incident, suffering from road rash. But overall it appears she was fine.
The Philadelphia Inquirer shared video of the rescue on their TikTok page and people in the comments section were just so grateful that this story has a happy ending. "Poor honey she is SO overheated and stressed out," wrote one commenter. "So happy these people cared enough to help Dorothy," someone else praised. "Thank you for helping that poor sweet angel. Hopefully cameras show who dropped them off," a third person added. "Poor Dorothy must’ve been horrific for her," someone else lamented.
Before arriving in the care of Eastern Snouts, the rescue told Fox 29 that Dorothy was rescued from a neglectful situation and was saved from going to auction. She will get her check up very soon and has already received a permanent home with an animal farm rescue. Although we probably have to imagine they'll try and keep the pig off the road from here on out.
