The best pillows of 2024 for every type of sleeper, according to testers and sleep experts

You spend a third of your life sleeping and your pillow plays a large role in how well you sleep at night. A great pillow should help keep your neck and spine well supported and aligned; and lend itself well to your natural sleep position - back, side or stomach. The research team here at AOL wanted to get to the bottom of what makes a pillow great for all types of sleepers, from side to back to hot or cold sleepers. We started by consulting with our panel of sleep experts and dermatologists to learn more about the materials used on both the outside and inside of pillows and how that relates to skin health. We also asked our experts to weigh in on which sleep position is best and what style of pillow is best for hot, cold and neutral sleepers.

Quick Overview

We took our experts' feedback and spent the past two months testing every style of pillow imaginable, especially those that met the needs of each type of sleep position — back, side and stomach. We've tested the best-rated pillows from memory foam to down and down-alternative to curved pillows, body pillows and even the Plufl that is taking the pet-lover world by storm. Keep reading to learn what our experts had to say and to see which pillows made the cut for the best pillows of 2024 for every type of sleeper.

While it is hard to say one pillow is best overall, we do have to tip our hat to SleepNumber's ComfortFit™ Pillow. What really impressed us is that SleepNumber has three different shaped versions of its wildly popular, top-rated ComfortFit™ Pillow, so side, back, and stomach sleepers can find their perfect fit.

According to the SleepNumber website, the pillow is made from a "unique blend of memory foam pieces and premium down alternative fibers." The outer Lyocell blend cover is breathable and hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for those with allergies or sensitive skin. This is important, says Dr. Ashley Magovern, a board-certified dermatologist, "Poor-quality pillow covers can cause irritation to the skin, such as itchiness or acne, because of synthetic dyes and subpar materials."

The ComfortFit™ Pillow is available in three shapes designed to fit the way you sleep:

Classic: Gently supports your head and neck. Best for stomach or back sleepers.

Curved: Fits your contours for enhanced comfort and support. Best for side or back sleepers

Ultimate: Three removable inserts let you individualize your support and height as your sleep needs change. Great for all sleeping positions. Recommend 1-2 inserts for stomach sleepers; 2-3 inserts for back or side sleepers.

Headleveler is a decades-old family-run company that specializes in great pillows. What's more, Headleveler makes the world's only Made-to-measure pillow, so if you truly have neck pain or cannot find the perfect pillow for you, Headlever can help by making a pillow according to your needs and measurements. The secret to its success is the emphasis the company puts on creating pillows that, first and foremost, offer unparalleled cervical support, so you sleep with perfect neck-to-spine alignment.

You can choose a made-to-measure pillow, which costs roughly the same as its pre-made cervical pillows, or an off-the-shelf version according to your needs. Cervical Headleveler pillows are designed to accommodate the length of your neck, your height and body weight, and your preferred sleeping position.

The pillows are hypoallergenic, machine-washable and filled with high-quality, soft polyester fiber. They contain three different-sized compartments to support your neck and spine best. According to Headleveler, "Compartmentalizing the pillow fill allows for minimum stuffing displacement, meaning you get consistent support throughout the night."

Headleveler offers four different pillow sizes—travel, standard, queen, and king—as well as seven different thicknesses and support levels for people of all sizes. That means there’s something for everyone!

Sleeping on your back comes with a host of health-boosting perks. Dr. Kien Vuu, a Regenerative Medicine specialist and assistant health sciences professor at UCLA, tells us, “Sleeping on your back keeps your spine aligned, head and neck supported, acid reflux at bay and wards off sleep-induced wrinkles, since you are not smooching your face into the pillow."

When it comes to bedding, Bedgear is an industry standout with its double-sided pillows, airflow vents, breathable fabrics, and, most of all, the Pillow ID sleep quiz, which matches you to your perfect pillow according to variables such as sleep position—side, back, or stomach—and whether you sleep hot, cold, or neutral. It's hard to beat Bedgear's Storm Performance Pillow for back sleepers, especially hot-sleepers.

The Storm Performance pillow features a double-sided design with a React Foam crown on top and React Blend fill on the bottom to choose a firm or plush feel. Its cooling pillow design features Breathable Air-X mesh and air vents for continuous airflow in and around the pillow, preventing heat buildup while you sleep by dispersing heat away from your head, neck, and shoulders.

The outer cover features a soft Ver-Tex instant-cooling material with a triangular pattern and silver-metallic stitching. According to your Pillow ID, the pillow comes in 4 sizes/heights to meet your fit and preferences. The cover is removable and washable.

Side-sleepers you will be happy to know, your favorite sleeping position isn't only comfy, its got health benefits: Dr. Shelby Harris, a psychologist and board-certified specialist in behavioral sleep medicine, tells us, "Side sleeping can be helpful for reducing acid reflux and heartburn and help those who snore — it may reduce the risk of sleep apnea — and [be helpful] for those who are pregnant, as it improves blood flow to the fetus."

Honeydew Essence Side-Sleeper Pillow won best overall thanks to its 100% adjustable filling, which lets you remove the amount of filling needed to create a pillow that is the exact height you need to ensure perfect alignment and comfort. It also has a customizable design and the option to choose between a queen or king pillow—many side sleeper pillows are only available in a standard or queen size.

We also love how Honeydew is a family-owned company that makes its pillows by hand in California using CertiPur-US certified gel-based memory foam for enhanced cooling and OEKO-TEX level 100 certified textiles derived from natural materials — baby safe/harmless for humans. Another feature that sets Honeydew apart is the 60-night sleep trial that allows you to love the pillow or return it for a no-questions-asked full refund. All Honeydew pillows also come with a three-year warranty.

If you don't love those standard crescent-shaped travel neck pillows, then this inflatable pillow is well worth a try. I came across this inflatable pillow while looking for something for my son to take camping. When it arrived, I was blown away by how soft and lightweight was — and how compact it was when not in use. After realizing I could inflate the pillow to my desired firmness or only partially and fold it in half to use as a lumbar cushion, I immediately ordered two more for my husband and me to use while traveling. At under $25, this pillow with a removable, machine-washable cover is a steal and makes a fantastic gift for the traveler or camper in your life.

Cost: A pillow that leaves you ache-free and well-rested every morning is no doubt worth every penny. However, when it comes to a high-quality pillow, those pennies add up fast. The good news is that many bedding retailers will hold sleep sales, such as those for Sleep Awareness Week, Memorial Day, Labor Day or Black Friday. Before splurging on the pillow of your dreams, price shop and ask yourself if a big sale holiday is coming up, and, if so, hold out for that to reap the rewards of deep discounts.

Outer material: As our experts mentioned, material is everything when it comes to bedding. You will want a material that is breathable to avoid overheating and clogging your pores. Look for fabrics that are both breathable and hypoallergenic.

Inner materials: What makes up the pillow is as important as the shell it’s encased in. Do you prefer a firmer memory foam pillow, a soft feather pillow, or something in between that is filled with varying layers of foam and feathers or fibers? It’s important to test the various types of pillows to find the firmness that will give your head, neck, and spine the needed support to leave you feeling rested and ache-free in the morning.

Hot/cold/neutral sleepers: Do you sleep hot or cold? Look for pillows that are clearly marked “cooling” for hot sleepers. For neutral and cold sleepers, you still want to make sure you find breathable materials that wick away heat and sweat.

Sizes available—Unfortunately, many of the pillows we tested only came in standard or queen sizes, so those with king-size beds may find themselves disappointed when deciding on the perfect pillow, only to find that it’s too small for their bed. In this case, you’ll want to weigh the pros and cons or check with the manufacturer's custom service line to see if it’s possible to order a king-size pillow.

Over the past two months, AOL’s bedding researchers have tested, slept on, jumped on, washed, and even driven over more than twenty types of pillows. We also consulted with our panel of sleep experts and dermatologists to learn what types of pillows and materials were best for various skin types and sleep positions.

What is the best pillow for neck pain?

When it comes to alleviating neck pain, look for pillows that offer cervical support that meets your size and weight needs, such as Headleveler’s range of made-to-measure pillows. You’ll want to avoid pillows that are too plush or too thick, as this will cause you to sleep in an uncomfortable position and no doubt leave you feeling very achy in the morning.

What is the best pillow for side sleepers?

Curved pillows are the greatest upgrade to pillows since memory foam. I personally sleep on my side with a curved Bedgear Culddle Curve Pillow, and it’s beyond wonderful. I fall right to sleep and wake up well-rested without neck or shoulder pain. If you are a side sleeper, I highly recommend giving a curved pillow designed for side sleepers a try.

What are the best-rated pillows?

I have found that the best-rated pillows are those made by brands devoted to quality bedding, such as SleepNumber, Bedgear, Purple, and Headleveler. These companies spend a great deal on research and development to ensure their products are top-notch. While I normally do not advocate for buying brand-name merchandise, when it comes to pillows, there’s a reason the brand name matters: It’s proven to produce unwavering quality bedding.

How often should you change your pillows?

Tanu Grewal, Chief Cleaning Officer at Pinalen, Cloralen and Ensueño Laundry, tells us, “Pillows typically have a lifespan of about two years,” adding the caveat that, “this can fluctuate depending on the materials and use they’re getting; if it’s feeling lumpy or has permanent stains, these are signs it’s time."

A great night sleep goes beyond a great pillow," says Gupta,"It's important to maintain a regular schedule, as irregular sleep patterns can lead to poorer sleep quality, as seen in students during summer vacation or in retirees without a set schedule who may experience poor and erratic sleep."
